Years ago, during my first job as a designer, I worked as an assistant in a one-person design studio.
The woman I worked for was quite creative and I’ll never forget one of the jobs we had...
It was a grocery store.
Together, we normally worked on kind of an odd mix of projects - some were residential, some commercial, mostly people she knew personally or had worked with in the past.
One of the interesting things she did on this particular project was design large, curved furred down areas around the perimeter of the store to be covered with photo murals. These photo murals had large scale black and white images of fruit, veggies, bread, medicines, meat, etc. that served to graphically guide people through the store without signage. Her ideas were quite different back then (no comment on how many years ago "back then" was ;-). She even had certain parts of the black and white images hand washed with color.
Since that project I have not used photo murals. I've just never run across an occasion when I thought they were appropriate or had a client adventurous enough for their use.
But today... I find myself intrigued.
Back then, we hired the photographer to take close-up images of the store's products, then they were developed, printed, and applied. The process of producing those photo murals was a huge task and quite expensive.
But today, these things are much easier.
